Diseases of the Stomach
The upper portion of the stomach relaxes to receive the food we eat and produces acid to ingested aid in digestion. The lower stomach is more muscular and grinds the food into small particles and then delivers it to the duodenum.

  Gastric Rugal Folds
The upper stomach has an array of folds termed rugae. This increases the surface area to allow greater amounts of gastric acid to be produced, and allows the stomach to enlarge to accomodate a large meal. The gastric rugae in this picture are normal.

  Sarcoidosis of the Stomach
Chronic inflammation of the stomach can cause an atropic gastritis, in which gastric rugal folds are diminished or lost. In this case of sarcoidosis, the gastric atropy is severe as noted by the absence of rugal folds in the body. Patients often feel full more quickly and usually produce greatly reduced amounts of gastric acid.

  Maltoma
Helicobacter pylori gastritis is associated with an uncommon form of lymphoma called a MALToma (mucosa associated lympoid tissue). In this example, the rugal folds are thickened, edematous and reddened.

  Benign Gastric Ulcer Gastric
A benign gastric ulcer often has rugal folds radiating from its center. It can cause deformity of the gastric wall and may bleed or cause a perforation.

  Malignant Gastric Ulcer
A depressed ulcer on a mass-like lesion on the wall of the stomach is usually a gastric cancer. Fortunately, gastric cancer is relatively uncommon in the United States.
