Diseases of the Stomach
-
The upper portion of the stomach relaxes to receive the food we eat and produces acid to ingested aid in digestion. The lower stomach is more muscular and grinds the food into small particles and then delivers it to the duodenum.

Gastric Rugal Folds
The upper stomach has an array of folds termed rugae. This increases the surface area to allow greater amounts of gastric acid to be produced, and allows the stomach to enlarge to accomodate a large meal. The gastric rugae in this picture are normal.
